Niclobest (Niclosamide) 500 mg
Niclobest contains niclosamide, a well-established intestinal anthelmintic used for tapeworm infections. It acts locally in the gut and is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, which supports its use for intestinal cestode infections rather than tissue infections.
Active Ingredient and Medicine Class
The verified active ingredient is niclosamide. It belongs to the salicylanilide anthelmintics and is used as a taenicide against intestinal tapeworms.
Established Medical Uses
Niclosamide is used for the treatment of intestinal tapeworm infections, including infections caused by Taenia solium and Taenia saginata. WHO sources also describe activity against some other intestinal cestodes, including Diphyllobothrium species and Hymenolepis nana.
How It Works
Niclosamide acts in the intestinal lumen against adult tapeworms. Its antiparasitic effect is linked to disruption of parasite energy metabolism, including interference with glucose uptake. Because it is only minimally absorbed, its action is mainly confined to the gut.
Important Safety Information
Official sources describe niclosamide as generally well tolerated, with little systemic absorption. It should not be used as a treatment for infections outside the intestine. WHO sources note important cautions, including use with alcohol and use in very young children. As with other anthelmintics, clinical judgement is needed when tapeworm infection may be associated with cysticercosis risk.
Possible Side Effects
Reported adverse effects are usually mild and transient. These may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort or diarrhoea, and occasional dizziness. Rarely, more significant intolerance may occur.

Published reviews and clinical studies support niclosamide as an effective treatment for taeniasis, with cure rates in the range reported by WHO and systematic review data. A recent systematic review found niclosamide effective for T. solium taeniasis, although the certainty of evidence was limited by study quality and heterogeneity. A 2024 population-based study also found niclosamide was generally safe in mass-treatment settings, with mostly mild adverse events.
