Description
Omforce (Omeprazole) 20 mg
Omforce 20 mg contains omeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor used to reduce stomach acid production. Omeprazole is an established prescription medicine for acid-related conditions, including gastroesophageal reflux disease, erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcer disease, and other hypersecretory disorders.
Active Ingredient and Medicine Class
The verified active ingredient is omeprazole. It belongs to the proton pump inhibitor (PPI) class. PPIs are acid-suppressing medicines that act on the gastric proton pump in the stomach lining.
Established Medical Uses
Official prescribing information for omeprazole delayed-release capsules lists use for active duodenal ulcer, Helicobacter pylori eradication in combination regimens to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcer recurrence, active benign gastric ulcer, symptomatic gastroesophageal reflux disease, erosive esophagitis due to acid-mediated GERD, maintenance of healing of erosive esophagitis, and pathologic hypersecretory conditions. Reviews in PubMed also describe its use in peptic ulcer disease and reflux-related disorders.
How It Works
Omeprazole blocks the gastric H+/K+-ATPase, the final step in acid secretion by parietal cells. By inhibiting this proton pump, it lowers both basal and stimulated acid production.
Important Safety Information
Omeprazole should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to omeprazole or other substituted benzimidazoles. Important precautions include the possibility of masking symptoms of more serious gastric disease. Product information also warns about clinically significant interactions, including reduced absorption of some medicines that depend on stomach acidity and interaction concerns with drugs metabolised through CYP pathways or affected by platelet inhibition.
Regulatory information also notes interaction-based concerns with clopidogrel, warfarin, diazepam, digoxin, and medicines such as rifampicin or certain antifungals that may alter omeprazole exposure or be affected by reduced gastric acidity.
Possible Side Effects
Common adverse effects reported with omeprazole include headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, and vomiting. More serious but less common risks include hypersensitivity reactions, severe skin reactions, low magnesium with prolonged use, vitamin B12 deficiency with long-term therapy, and an increased risk of certain infections associated with acid suppression.
Scientific Evidence
PubMed-indexed reviews consistently describe omeprazole as a highly effective acid-suppressing medicine for peptic ulcer disease and reflux oesophagitis, with healing and symptom improvement driven by sustained inhibition of gastric acid secretion. Reviews also note its established role in Helicobacter pylori combination therapy and in hypersecretory conditions.
