Sumitop (Sumatriptan) 100 mg
Sumitop 100 mg is a brand name for sumatriptan, an oral triptan medicine used for the acute treatment of migraine attacks in adults. It is not used to prevent migraines or to treat non-migraine headaches.
Active Ingredient and Medicine Class
The verified active ingredient is sumatriptan. It belongs to the triptan class and acts as a selective serotonin receptor agonist, mainly at 5-HT1B/1D receptors.
Established Medical Uses
Official prescribing information identifies sumatriptan tablets for the acute treatment of migraine with or without aura in adults. Use is limited to cases where migraine has been clearly diagnosed. It is not indicated for migraine prevention, and safety and effectiveness have not been established for cluster headache in the tablet form.
How It Works
Sumatriptan is thought to relieve migraine by activating serotonin receptors involved in migraine pathways. Human and review data describe its antimigraine effect as related to cranial blood vessel constriction and inhibition of migraine-related nerve inflammation and pain signalling.
Important Safety Information
Sumatriptan tablets are contraindicated in patients with coronary artery disease or vasospasm, Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome or related conduction disorders, stroke or transient ischemic attack, hemiplegic or basilar migraine, peripheral vascular disease, ischemic bowel disease, uncontrolled hypertension, severe hepatic impairment, hypersensitivity to sumatriptan, and with recent use of other triptans or ergot-type medicines, or concurrent/recent use of an MAO-A inhibitor.
Important warnings include rare but serious myocardial ischemia or infarction, arrhythmias, stroke, other vasospasm reactions, serotonin syndrome, and medication overuse headache. Caution is advised in patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
Possible Side Effects
Common adverse effects reported with sumatriptan tablets include paresthesia, warm or cold sensations, chest, neck, throat, or jaw pressure or pain, vertigo, and malaise or fatigue. Serious reactions can include hypersensitivity reactions, vasospasm, and cardiovascular events.
Scientific Evidence
PubMed-indexed reviews and meta-analyses show that oral sumatriptan is more effective than placebo for acute migraine relief, including headache relief and reduction of associated symptoms such as nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia. Evidence also suggests that the 100 mg oral dose is an effective option for acute attacks, while higher doses may increase adverse effects without clearly improving benefit over lower oral doses.
