Telmaheal (Telmisartan) 40 mg
Telmaheal 40 mg contains telmisartan, an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used in the management of hypertension. It is an oral tablet medicine.
Active Ingredient and Medicine Class
Telmisartan belongs to the angiotensin II receptor blocker class. ARBs act on the renin-angiotensin system, a hormone pathway involved in blood vessel tone and blood pressure regulation.
Established Medical Uses
Telmisartan is established for the treatment of hypertension to lower blood pressure. In some prescribing information, telmisartan is also indicated for cardiovascular risk reduction in selected patients with documented cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes and target-organ damage. Approved uses can vary by country and product licence.
How It Works
Telmisartan blocks angiotensin II from binding to the AT1 receptor. This reduces blood vessel constriction and lowers the pressure needed for blood to flow through the arteries. By reducing angiotensin II activity, it also helps lessen aldosterone-related sodium and water retention.
Important Safety Information
Telmisartan is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to telmisartan or any product component. It should not be used during pregnancy because drugs that act on the renin-angiotensin system can cause fetal harm; treatment should be stopped if pregnancy is detected.
Important precautions include hypotension, hyperkalemia, and impaired renal or hepatic function. Clinically significant interactions include aliskiren in patients with diabetes, ACE inhibitors with ARBs as dual renin-angiotensin system blockade, NSAIDs reducing effect and increasing renal risk, and digoxin, which may require monitoring.
Possible Side Effects
Common adverse effects reported in hypertension trials include back pain, sinusitis, and diarrhoea. Other recognised reactions include dizziness, low blood pressure, increased potassium, kidney-related laboratory changes, rash, angioedema, and rarely rhabdomyolysis.
Scientific Evidence
Published reviews and clinical studies show that telmisartan lowers blood pressure effectively over a 24-hour period and is generally well tolerated. Review literature also describes cardiovascular and renal outcome evidence in selected patient groups, although the exact licensed indication depends on the jurisdiction.
