Dutastic (Dutasteride) 0.5 mg
Dutastic 0.5 mg is a brand name for dutasteride, an oral 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It is used for the medical management of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men with an enlarged prostate. Dutasteride helps reduce prostate volume over time and may improve lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH.
Active Ingredient and Medicine Class
The verified active ingredient is dutasteride. It belongs to the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor class. This group of medicines lowers the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that contributes to prostate growth.
Established Medical Uses
Dutasteride is established for the treatment of symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate. Prescribing information also notes that it may help reduce the risk of BPH-related complications such as acute urinary retention and the need for surgery in appropriately selected patients.
It is not a general treatment for all urinary symptoms, and it is not intended to diagnose or rule out other causes of prostate or urinary tract problems.
How It Works
Dutasteride inhibits both type 1 and type 2 forms of 5-alpha-reductase. By reducing DHT levels, it gradually decreases stimulation of prostate tissue. Over time, this can lead to a smaller prostate and improvement in urinary flow and symptom burden in men with BPH.
Important Safety Information
Dutasteride is contraindicated in pregnancy and must not be used by women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant. Exposure during pregnancy can harm a male fetus. The medicine is also not indicated for use in women or children.
Important precautions include the fact that dutasteride can lower prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values, which may affect interpretation of prostate cancer screening. Clinicians typically consider this when evaluating PSA results.
Clinically significant interactions are limited, but dutasteride is metabolized by CYP3A4, so strong inhibitors of this pathway may increase exposure. Caution is also warranted when it is used with other medicines for BPH, as combination treatment is sometimes clinically considered in selected patients.
Before starting therapy, medical assessment is important because BPH symptoms can overlap with other conditions, including urinary retention, infection, and prostate cancer.
Possible Side Effects
Commonly reported adverse effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory disorders, and breast tenderness or enlargement. Some patients may also report dizziness or rash.
Serious or clinically important reactions are less common but can include allergic reactions and persistent sexual side effects. Any new breast changes or concerning prostate symptoms should be medically reviewed.
Scientific Evidence
Randomised trials and pooled analyses have found that dutasteride improves urinary symptom scores, increases urinary flow, and reduces prostate volume in men with BPH. Evidence also supports a reduction in the risk of acute urinary retention and BPH-related surgery in men with enlarged prostates.
Longer-term studies suggest that benefits can be sustained over years of treatment. Comparative studies show that dutasteride is broadly similar to other 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors in this therapeutic area, although study results vary by outcome measure and patient population.
Research has also examined prostate cancer detection and risk signals with 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors. These findings require cautious interpretation and do not establish a cancer-prevention indication for routine use of dutasteride.
