How It Works

Important Safety Information
Sildenafil is contraindicated with organic nitrates and with riociguat because of the risk of marked blood-pressure lowering. It should also be avoided in people for whom sexual activity is inadvisable because of underlying cardiovascular status. Caution is needed with alpha-blockers, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ritonavir, and in patients with hepatic impairment or severe renal impairment, where higher sildenafil exposure may occur.
Clinically significant interactions are also noted with other PDE5 inhibitors and other erectile dysfunction therapies, which should not be combined without medical supervision.
Possible Side Effects
The most commonly reported adverse effects include headache, flushing, dyspepsia, nasal congestion, abnormal vision, back pain, myalgia, nausea, dizziness, and rash. Serious reactions are uncommon but may include significant hypotension, hypersensitivity reactions, and cardiovascular events in susceptible patients.

Randomized trials and systematic reviews show that sildenafil improves erectile function and successful intercourse rates compared with placebo in men with erectile dysfunction.
