How It Works
Sildenafil blocks the PDE5 enzyme, which normally breaks down cyclic GMP. By preserving cyclic GMP, it supports smooth muscle relaxation and improves penile blood flow during sexual arousal, making erection more likely when there is sexual stimulation.
Important Safety Information
Sildenafil must not be used with nitrates or other nitric oxide donors because of the risk of marked blood pressure lowering. It is also contraindicated with guanylate cyclase stimulators such as riociguat and in people with known hypersensitivity to sildenafil or any tablet component.
Prescribing information advises caution in people with cardiovascular disease, recent heart attack or stroke, severe hypotension, uncontrolled hypertension, or conditions where sexual activity itself may be unsafe. Important interactions can occur with alpha-blockers, strong CYP3A4 inhibitors such as ritonavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, saquinavir and erythromycin, and with amlodipine, which may increase blood-pressure-lowering effects.
Possible Side Effects
Common adverse effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, indigestion, dizziness and visual disturbance. Serious reactions are uncommon but can include prolonged erection, sudden vision loss, sudden hearing loss, severe allergic reactions and symptomatic low blood pressure.
