How It Works
Mebendazole binds to parasite β-tubulin and disrupts microtubule formation. This impairs glucose uptake and other essential functions in the worm, leading to loss of energy and death of the parasite. The medicine is poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, which helps keep much of its action within the intestine.
Important Safety Information
Mebendazole is contraindicated in people with hypersensitivity to mebendazole or any component of the product, and product labeling for some formulations also lists pregnancy as a contraindication or advises avoiding use, particularly in the first trimester. Important cautions include rare reports of liver function disturbances, hepatitis, and neutropenia. A clinically significant interaction has been reported with metronidazole, with serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis.
Possible Side Effects
Reported adverse effects include abdominal pain, diarrhoea, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Less common but more serious reactions include rash, urticaria, liver abnormalities, neutropenia, and very rare severe skin reactions, especially with metronidazole co-use.
