How It Works

Important Safety Information
Levothyroxine should not be used in untreated thyrotoxicosis and is contraindicated in uncorrected adrenal insufficiency. It should be used with caution in people with cardiovascular disease, because excess thyroid hormone can increase cardiac workload and precipitate symptoms of overtreatment. Important interactions include medicines and supplements that reduce absorption or alter thyroid hormone handling, such as iron, calcium-containing products, bile acid sequestrants, some antacids, and several other prescription medicines.
Possible Side Effects
When the dose is too high, adverse effects are generally those of hyperthyroidism. These may include palpitations, rapid heartbeat, nervousness, tremor, insomnia, heat intolerance, sweating, weight loss, and diarrhea. More serious effects can include arrhythmias, angina, and reduced bone density with prolonged overtreatment.
