How It Works
Lorazepam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This reduces excessive nerve activity and produces calming, sedative, muscle-relaxing and anticonvulsant effects.
Important Safety Information
Lorazepam is contraindicated in people with hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or any component of the formulation, and in acute narrow-angle glaucoma. Important precautions include the risk of abuse, misuse, physical dependence and withdrawal reactions, as well as worsening depression in susceptible patients. Concomitant use with opioids, alcohol, or other central nervous system depressants can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, or death. Caution is also advised in older adults because sedation and unsteadiness may be more likely.
Possible Side Effects
Common adverse effects include sedation and dizziness. Other recognised effects include drowsiness, weakness, confusion, unsteadiness and impaired coordination. Serious reactions can include respiratory depression, paradoxical behavioural reactions, dependence, withdrawal symptoms and severe excessive sedation, especially with other depressant medicines or alcohol.

Clinical studies and reviews support lorazepam’s short-term anxiolytic effect. A randomized, double-blind trial in adults with moderate to severe anxiety found lorazepam significantly reduced anxiety compared with placebo over four weeks. More recent reviews continue to describe benzodiazepines, including lorazepam, as short-term options for anxiety symptoms, while also emphasising safety limitations and dependence risk.
