Lorazepam is a prescription benzodiazepine medicine. This product is identified as lorazepam 1 mg tablets. Benzodiazepines are central nervous system depressants used for short-term relief of anxiety symptoms and for other selected clinical uses depending on the approved label.
Active Ingredient and Medicine Class
The verified active ingredient is lorazepam. It belongs to the benzodiazepine class. Lorazepam acts as a sedative, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and amnestic agent through enhancement of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)-mediated inhibitory activity in the brain.

Lorazepam is also used in other approved settings in different formulations, including premedication for anesthesia and treatment of status epilepticus.
How It Works
Lorazepam enhances the effect of GABA, the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. This reduces excessive nerve-cell activity and can produce calming, sedative, muscle-relaxant, and anticonvulsant effects.
Important Safety Information
Lorazepam carries a boxed warning for concomitant use with opioids, abuse, misuse, and addiction, and dependence and withdrawal reactions. Combining benzodiazepines with opioids can cause profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death. The label also warns that abrupt discontinuation or rapid dose reduction after continued use may trigger serious withdrawal reactions, including seizures.
Important precautions include a history of substance use disorder, depression, respiratory disease, sleep apnea, and use with alcohol or other medicines that depress the central nervous system. The product is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to benzodiazepines or any component of the formulation.
Possible Side Effects
Commonly reported adverse effects include drowsiness, sedation, dizziness, and somnolence. Other recognised effects include fatigue, confusion, memory impairment, ataxia, and impaired coordination. Serious reactions can include respiratory depression, severe hypersensitivity, worsening depression, dependence, and withdrawal symptoms.
Scientific Evidence
Clinical studies and reviews support lorazepam’s short-term anxiolytic effect, with older controlled trial data showing improvement in anxiety compared with placebo. More recent reviews describe the class as effective in the short term, while also emphasising tolerability concerns and the limitations of long-term use data.
